On Monday, February 19, the pastors and teachers in the southeast conference of the Michigan District assembled at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Plymouth, Michigan for growing in God's word and mutual encouragement. The pastors also met on Tuesday, February 20. Here are some photos from St. Peter's.
Sermons, ramblings, and maybe an occasional rant from a Lutheran subject of Jesus Christ.

A photo session -- 2016 basketball games, part 2
Once again, it is time to post a few more photos from the basketball season. We are quickly coming up on the end of the year (only a few weeks away). Faith is enjoying a little run in their conference playoffs. Unfortunately, they play toinght at UW-Superior while we will be coming home after church. We should be able to catch most of it when we get home. Go Knights! (And thanks to whoever has been taking the photos in Minnesota and has been posting them on Facebook!) This Photo Session will feature Faith (Martin Luther College) and Philip (St. Peter's Lutheran School).
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Since we were not able to make it to New Ulm for Parents' Day, Faith was escorted by her cousins, Daniel and Jacob Schmidt. Thanks, guys!!! |

A photo session -- 2016 basketball games
I have not done much with the basketball season this year. Part of it is because basketball has a lot more games than football, and so it gets tedious to document everything. Part of it is because we have not be able to get to many of the games. For that matter, we have not beren very good about watching some games online. It has been a busy year. And part of it is because this season is not living up to the seasons we enjoyed in years past. We have gotten to learn to face defeat and disappointment more than we have been accustomed to.
Anyway, here are a bunch of photos selected from the season. Enjoy.

Floor hockey tournament
On Saturday, St. Peter's Lutheran School made the journey to St. John's Lutheran School in Westland for the annual floor hockey tournament. With a small squad coming from St. Peter's, I don't know if anyone had many expectations for St. Peter's. Nonetheless, St. Peter's did have mainly 8th graders playing, so we thought that might produce some results.
The first game was tight -- a 2-1 loss to the 7th grade team from St. Paul's, Livonia. We won the next contest 10-1 against Peace, Livonia. The results were tallied from all the morning contests and teams were slotted for the playoff rounds.
St. Peter's won their first playoff match against St. Paul's, Livonia 8th graders in tight 2-0 match. As the playoff brackets lined up, that put St. Peter's in the championship game vs. the home town St. John's Leopards.
Philip took the opening face-off and broke into the St. John's zone for a quick score. St. Peter's was up 1-0 within the first 15 seconds of the game. As it turned out, that goal was incredibly important, as it was the only one St. Peter's scored all game. St. John's hit the tying goal with about 3 minutes left in the game. We went to a shoot out.
St. Peter's hit three goals, and John Lovell came up BIG in St. Peter's net blocking the St. John's attempts. The last St. John's attempt was dangerously close to a goal (photo below). St. Peter's came home as floor hockey champs for 2015. Way to go, Eagles!

This was just before Philip scored a goal less than 15 seconds into the championship goal. It was St. Peter's only goal until the shoot out. |

The Graduate
The proud grad! |
Nevertheless, he does not advance to a new room or get a new teacher. He will still be taught by his mother and my lovely wife, Laura. I hope that Peter will not put her to the test too much next year!
Way to go, Peter!!!

Basketball -- HVL Tournament
This past weekend, Huron Valley Lutheran High School (HVL) hosted its annual grade school tournament for the various WELS grade schools in the southeast Michigan area, including one school from Jenera, Ohio. (Try and find it on a map. It's southwest of Findlay.)
Philip's St. Peter's team entered the tournament ranked the #3 seed. The first game was a win against Peace Lutheran School of Livonia, 34-21. Coach Theurer managed to give all the kids a good deal of playing time in this one, which was good because they did not get much playing time in the remaining two games.
Saturday's game had us facing the #2 seed (and eventual tournament champs) Divine Grace Lutheran School of Lake Orion. I figured we would have our hands full against this team, but we did not help ourselves at all. Many shots just wouldn't fall. That happens. You can't do much about that. But bad passing and unforced turnovers led to a LOT of break away layups and gimme points for Divine Grace. The final was a St. Peter's loss, 24-40.
Sunday was the 3rd place game against Trinity Lutheran School of Jenera, Ohio. This was a hard-fought game and stayed very close throughout. Philip was on fire in the first half. If memory serves, he hit three 3-pointers. Down 32-31 with about 10 seconds left, St. Peter's had the ball and was passing it around to chew up clock and take the last shot. But Trinity's defense stepped up and never gave St. Peter's a good look at the hoop. The last second shot attempt was not a very good look and it did not go in. So, St. Peter's ended up with a 4th place finish after the 32-31 loss.
While the St. Peter's Eagles certainly wanted a trophy, it is nice to see the bitterness of defeat does not stick to these kids very long. Many of them stayed to watch the remaining games and cheer on other kids with whom they have made some nice friendships.
Actually, St. Peter's did come home with one trophy -- the Sportsmanship Award for exemplary behavior on the basketball court. I am proud of them for winning that. But to be fair to all other teams, all the kids (from what I witnessed) were very well behaved and respectful. They all had that to be proud of.

Basketball weekend -- St. Peter's and MLS
This past weekend, we got our share of basketball games. St. Peter's went to Michigan Lutheran Seminary for a co-ed team basketball tournament. St. Peter's played well and won all of their games in their round robin tournament, playing teams from Warren (Crown of Life), Burton (Good Shepherd) and even Falls Church, VA (Grace). Really, they came from Virginia!
Anyway, Philip had three good games. And we also got to bring home some hardware. Photos here:

We had hoped to watch Caleb's MLS Freshmen squad play at Millington, but Millington did not have a Freshmen team of their own, so we did not get to see Caleb play. Our schedule has prohibited us from seeing most of his games, so this was a bummer.
On Friday night, the MLS varsity Cardinals took their undefeated schedule to take on #1 seeded Millington at the Millington gym. To say it simply, it was not MLS' night. Too many missed layups and short baskets; too many missed free throws, and rebounds which ended up in Millington's hands all night long ended up taking their toll. Still, MLS lost only 72-67. Millington would be quick to note that their leading scorer did not play, so both teams claimed that they could have done better. Chances are, there will be a rematch come the playoffs, and that will be an interesting match up.

Andrew has had his share of blocks this year. Here is another. This was almost certainly called a foul that night. [All ball] |

MLS Basketball vs. Alma
Michigan Lutheran Seminary played Alma on Friday night. The Freshmen team missed WAY too many layups to overcome Alma. The final was 48-28, and I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that if MLS had made all their layups, they could have won.
Sidenote: From a distance away, Laura watched Philip and the St. Peter Eagles in Plymouth as they split their games for the evening. It is hard to pick and choose who to see or not.
The varsity game was HUGE for both teams. Each team entered the game leading their respective conferences (Tri-Valley Central--MLS vs West--Alma). MLS was also hoping to keep its undefeated record perfect.
It was a hard fought game, with the refs letting a LOT of contact go. Almost no reach in calls, and no loose ball fouls when bodies were crashing all over the floor trying to scoop up loose balls. Both teams' fans hoped for better, and neither got it. In other words, both sides were screwed consistently. But I guess you can be thankful for at least the consistent part.
You can see a really nice recap of the game from channel 12 news here. or here:

This is who Andrew had to guard for a chunk of the night, 6'10" Junior, Dylan Carl. He's Lutheran, too! |
