Basketball 2021

This year, Peter played basketball for the 5th and 6th grade team for St. Paul's.  All the players were dutifully masked up.  Peter never complained about it, which was admirable.

St. Paul's had a pretty successful season.  Peter did not start, but got decent playing time.  He scored a few baskets and pulled down some rebounds.  As he learns the game better (and practices more in our drive way -- nudge, nudge), he will become more productive.

Here are some photos from the season, both games against Northville Christian School.

Basketball, at last

I have been negligent in posting anything about the basketball season this year.  I don't feel like we have gotten to many games this year for various reasons.  (Maybe not including a JV schedule makes a difference there.)  Still, it has been a season where we have enjoyed watching the MLS Cardinals play, though at times it has also been frustrating.  Perhaps that perfectly explains the near-.500 record.

On the upside, MLS has entered the post-season and has already won the first game of Districts against Vassar, 50-41.  On Wednesday, they will face Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy (aka, SASA).  Unfortunately, I was not able to be there on Monday and will not be there on Wednesday due to my schedule.  I hope they win so that Friday's game for the District Championship will happen.  That one I can see.  Go Cardinals!

Anyway, you can check out the scores throughout the season yourself at M-Live (though some are missing).  Here are a few photos of Caleb and teammates throughout the season.

Track Meets

Last weekend, we had a bunch of our kids involved in track meets.  Caleb and Philip had just the one at Huron Valley Lutheran High School.  Here are some of their photos.

After that, we headed up north to finally catch one of Faith's and Nathanael's track meets.  Apparently, they have both been having a very good year.  They have both done well at the 110 meter hurdles.  Less favorite is the 300 meter hurdles, but that is what we got to see because we got up there late.  Anyway, it was the last time Faith would ever run that race.  She was not nearly as broken up by that as she was by the end of basketball season.

Anyway, here are a few photos of Faith and Nathanael (gray sleeves), taken on a bitter, cold, and windy day at Akron-Fairgrove High School.

October Break

St. Peter Lutheran School had its October break for the Teachers' conference, so we got out of town.  "Getting out of town" has come to mean more and more going to Saginaw.  So, off we went.

We saw Faith play volleyball vs. Ithaca.  No photos.  We just sat and watch the game.  The MLS girls played VERY well, beating Ithaca 25-19, 25-8, 25-19.  Faith personally did quite well.  It was a lot of fun to watch.

Then we went to Andrew's JV game at Breckenridge.  Again, no photos, but with the cold weather and spitting rain, it was just as well that the camera did not go outside.  Peter slept in the car and Laura stayed with him.  Caleb and Philip found a patch of grass to play their own football.  Andrew played quarterback.  He ran for quite a few yards, including on TD run.  He also threw for another.  MLS won handily, 42-0.

At our hotel, the boys swam in the pool and got caught up on the adventures of Spongebob Squarepants.  As you can see, they also made good use of their time at Bronners in Frankenmuth.

Friday night was Parents' Night at MLS.  MLS hosted Breckenridge and won 49-21.  Nathanael did not play much in the second half, as the senior wide receivers got precedence over others.  He was this close to scoring a TD.

These games are getting colder and colder.

QUEEN!!!

Faith was voted as Homecoming Queen last weekend!

She and Hailey were the two senior representatives.  Either one would have made a fine queen.  Pardon my bias, but I am glad it was Faith.  Congratulations, Faith!  You were (are!) beautiful!  The Homecoming King was Austin Schneider from Saginaw.

The games for the weekend went well, too.  We missed Andrew's JV game, but they apparenlty played very well and beat (I think I had heard a previously undefeated) St. Charles 21-20.  Andrew also said that he scored a TD.

The varsity game was not nearly as close.  MLS won 60-14.  Nathanael caught a TD pass early in the game with a nice run after the catch, juking his way into the end zone.  He also caught a long bomb late in the first half, but I missed it.  I was climbing into a Corvette painted pretty much the same color as our house.  Photos are below.

Sports weekened

It has already been a full weekend.

We missed Andrew's game against Carrollton on Thursday.  MLS pulled out a 6-0 win.  Andrew said that playing in a defensive game like that was a lot of fun.  I'm sure being on the winning end of it helped.

Nathanael and his team could have used more of that defense.  They faced a strong Carrollton varsity who handed them a 49-7 loss.  MLS also lost a few players due to injury.  It sounds like Nathanael may well get vaulted into the starting QB position.  He'd rather keep playing wide receiver.  After his one-handed catch on a long pass, who could blame him?

We stayed at Bay City State Park Friday night.  (According to my calendar, it's still summer, right?)  It was cheaper to do that than to drive home.  Plus, we wanted to see Faith play volleyball (finally!).

There was good and bad in Faith's volleyball tournament.  Their best match was against Carrollton, exacting a little revenge for the football game the night before.

In the end (after 5 two-game matches), MLS took 5th out of 9 teams.

After church today, I think a nap is in order.

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL???

Football season has begun with mixes reviews.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23
MLS at Carson City-Cyrstal

Thursday saw the debut of Andrew's first game of JV football.  Andrew did kickoff returns (shown at left) and punt returns, as well as playing safety for the entire 2nd half.

A late score brought MLS to within two, but that's where it ended after an onside kick attempt was recovered by CC-C.

Final score
Michigan Lutheran Seminary   28
Carson City-Crystal                 30

AUGUST, FRIDAY 24
Carson City-Cyrstal at MLS

The result on Friday, August 24 was dramatically different.  Nathanael's first varsity game was a convincing 41-6 win.  Nathanael scored a TD with :00 left in the first half.  This, following a defensive holding penalty on the last play -- which was called, then waved off, then finally assessed after CC-C had bolted into the locker room.  CC-C came back out for the final play, which ended with a pass interference call.  So the REAL last play of the first half was Nathanael's TD catch (as shown).

 Final score
Carson City-Crystal                  6
Michigan Lutheran Seminary 41

Scheduling did not allow us to see Faith's volleyball tournament at MLS.  She told us the result was not what they wanted, coming short of bringing home a trophy.  Faith is seen here, clearly not fond of the smell of a postgame Nathanael.

Laura and I are enjoying all of the WOO-HOO's of the fall sports schedule.  We are not enjoying the Cha-CHING's at the gas pump.
